It has to do with Google ads redirecting several times on some sites. When you click back, it's actually working, but it's going through a bunch of ads instead of the last web page you visited. IE11 is also the fastest. Firefox has a configuration setting for what Backspace does.

This issue is resolved with the latest update KB2962872 IE 11.0.9600.17206 and with enabling ‘Use Microsoft compatibility lists' under Compatibility View Settings.
