like to buy a part and replace it at home? A toothpick maybe helpful doing this. I've been assured by other photographers that this is normal. Canon Lens Won't Autofocus
When it doesn't it is accompanied by a high-pitched squealing noise. I'm not too familiar with the 40D, is the focusing motor built in to the lens or the camera! Mind the long plastic axis to be locked into the short gear collet because otherwise the focus won’t work at all.

Have you ever read a credible account of it happening? Here's a simple answer that makes sense - because the resistance to motion of the focussing ring while switched to AF mode makes MF difficult.
