If the hot-shoe switch is stuck in the down position the camera will report that an external flash gun is installed and changing settings for the in-built flash is not possible.For In 'P' mode it will flash everytime.\015\012\015\012That said, the many flashes does not sound right.

Can you see a wiggling space between the flash shoe and camera? Has anyone gone further and replaced the switches?
