I have a Macbook Pro Mid 2012 model and formatting Windows and installing it again in Legacy mode (not UEFI / EFI) immediately fixed the sound issue - without even having followed by the nice obnoxious chirp on Microsoft's sound test. What is this MS tool and how can I use it to make a BIOS install rather than the EFI install I have now? The "geniuses" at Mac support told me jam an object in the jack hole as something was stuck (not).

Windows may show that it is detecting levels of sound but you are unable to hear anything. all sound worked.
